Nice shot! Excellent lighting. Sets a very classic mood. Reflection works really well. Find there is a lot of negative space. Appears to be unnatural lighting/background behind the model.

Failure To Communicate

Comment:
Hi! Here’s a comment from the Critique Club.

First Impression:
My eyes went to the mans face then to the girls face. Expressions are excellent. Lot’s of attitude.

Composition:
The wall and the tree contribute well to the “failure” to communicate subject. Works as a metaphorical barrier as well. By having their backs to each other but both looking over their shoulders really supports the mood. I also like the fact that the girl is sitting with a defiant posture and the man is standing with his hands in his pockets.

Subject:
Meets challenge well

Technical:
Sensor dust!
I find the focus a little soft despite your post processing

Summary:
Ok I didn’t mean to be disrespectful, (either way)â€Â¦.but I read the comments after I write my critique. I thought the subject was between father and daughter. I have a 24 year old daughter, so I related to her with this shot. (Doesn’t change the comments, just my point of reference)

I really like the emotive capture and congrats on the 6+ score

I like the shot. The rotation feels awkward.

The Slide Rule

Hi! Here’s a comment from the Critique Club.

First Impression:
My eyes were drawn to the screw head. Nice spot light effect. Not much in focus!

Composition:
I like the diagonal line created. The black background works well with the yellow.

Subject:
Meets challenge. I used a slide rule in the obsolete challenge! May not have met the “Looks Old” criteria that I think some of the voters were looking for.

Technical:
Lighting is good. DOF really shallow. I would have liked to have seen much more in focus. The amount of image out of focus really takes away from the picture.

Summary:
Nice picture and set up. Shallow DOF and not “Looking Old” probably worked against you. It would be nice to see you redo this with more DOF.

Hi! Here’s a comment from the Critique Club.

First Impression:
Nice leading lines/vanishing point. My eyes follow the lines and then back to the person on the right. Don’t see anything candid!

Composition:
Very nice lines. Dark panels in the ceiling really work well with the walls and the rest of the ceiling. The curved walls really add to the perspective. Nice to see the vanishing point off of center. Motion blur works well in setting the mood.

Subject:
Not sure it meets the challenge. Candid implies catching peoples expression when they don’t expect it. Can’t see any ones expression.

Technical:
You didn’t include any processing information so I don’t know what your camera settings were or what you were trying to achieve. B&W works well. Focus is a little soft. Some USM may have helped too.

Suggestions:
Camera settings, can usually be found by using your viewer and right clicking, and selecting properties. You may have to make another selection based on your viewer. As long as it’s an original file, the camera data should be there.

Summary:
Congratulations on your best score. You have a good eye. Keep shooting!

Excellent colours and DOF. Like the leading line and the selection of the one open flower. Top right corner "spheres" are a little distracting.

Nice colours and use of negative space. A few white specs near the green. Whites are almost blown

Hi! Here’s a comment from the Critique Club.

First Impression:
My eye drawn directly to the right eye, (dogs left)
Colour seems a bit off. Pinkish/orange

Composition:
The cropping is a little too tight. Can’t get a “candid” moment. Need to see more of the context, pose, tail, ears etcâ€Â¦

Subject:
Meets challenge, but I can see why you received some of the DNMC comments

Technical:
You didn’t make any processing comments, so I don’t know what you tried to do. DOF really shallow. Don’t know actual colour, but it looks a little “off”.

Summary:
Ok technically, but your composition made it hard for voters to get a “Candid” feeling. I have a couple dogs, so I know what you were trying to capture, but this “capture” doesn’t tell a story.

Welcome to DPC! This place gets addictive. Don’t worry about your first entry. At least you did! This is a great learning site. Watch, read, participate, it’s all good.
