Hey, just came back to look over some of the entries for this challenge and noticed this is your first entry. This is a good first attempt and you should be very proud! My first was a stinker ha ha. I notice in your comments you say you'd like to have tried something more creative and this was my main criticism in the comments - just remember though, creativity can't be forced and in the absence of a trully creative idea I'd go with a technically good one instead, which is what this is. Good luck for future submissions!

It's a shame that this didn't score better, I still think its deserving a ribbon as all the elements of the photo are strong and you didn't sacrifice the concept behind the shot. It's a shame that using daring subject matter impacts your score so negatively here at DPC, I guess its one of those love/hate things!

The choice of colours is interesting in this shot, the rich reds are really appealing and contrast well with the yellow of the liquid. I'm not sure about the 'dropper' above the liquid, it doesn't seem to sit right with the photo. As you have frozen the movement in the liquid, I would also perhaps have tried to freeze a droplet of the liquid falling into the beaker but as it is I think this shot is okay. Overall 6.

The blue liquid with the bubbles is a really attractive subject and the entire picture illustrates the concept of Chemistry really well. The inclusion of the periodic table is a nice extra to add more emphasis to the theme and is a subtle but nice addition to the shot.

The blown highlights on the background do let this photo down a bit I'm afraid, so overall I give this a 5.

I like your slightly off centre main subject for the composition of this photo. The green liquid obviously draws the attention first and foremost and draws the eye towards the centre of the image. There's a slight feeling of narrative with the photo as we are indeed, as the title suggests, looking at the aftermath of some kind of experiment presumably gone wrong. 6 from me.

A great macro shot which you've clearly been very patient in waiting for. The most striking feature of this picture is the colours of course, the vibrant green background is great on its own but the way the insects pop from the background due to the vibrant tapastry of colour is great. What could have been an 'Eurgh, two bugs at it!' shot becomes a beautiful observation on nature, and I commend you for this.

In terms of illustrating the concept of Chemistry though I do feel like this one falls a little short for my liking. Yes a chemical process is involved here but thats not the over-riding story of the photo and not the feeling I take away from the image. Overall 7.

You have clearly spent some time thinking about the composition of this photo and this is evident from the details. Even the subtle sugar spillage in the foreground to add texture to an otherwise boring surface is a nice touch and well thought out. The colours work well together and the strong backlighting adds a mysterious quality which also casts a kind of sureal light on your subjects, adding extra interest to the image.

Having said that, the initial excitement of this photo soon dissipates as there isn't an awful lot to hold my attention in the photo. There are no rewards for the viewer by spending time studying the picture and so I'm left feeling a little unsatisfied. Overall, 6.

Whilst browsing the thumbnails of the images for this challeneg I didn't really pay this much attention which is a shame as its a really great shot and you need to see it at full size to really appreciate it. What I like is how you have linked the challenge of chemistry with the title and concept of your image, photosynthasis. But how to display this invisible chemistry in your photo? The vibrant saturated greens are a great way of doing this but what I like more than that is the backlighting which focuses attention on the minute details within the structure of the leaf. I hope people don't overlook this as it so beautifully illustrates the concept of photosynthesism, and the rim light around the outside of the leaf is an awesome touch.

Technically.. well, that shadow isn't doing you any favours, it really competes for attention and in this image particularly you need to avoid that at all costs. I would have liked to have seen a slightly different composition - the same effects in play but closer up with maybe not the entire leaf showing and some of that great bokeh in the background. Overall, I like this one and have given it an 8.

Quite a simple shot with some nice effects. The water ripples and the highlight under the water work really well and draw your eye to the centre of the shot where the droplets are beautifully frozen. The cool blue was a great choice to add a cold feeling to the water and the fall off in lighting towards the top of the image is a nice touch to again centre attention towards the middle.

No real technical criticisms, but I'd have liked to have seen a bit more creativity in terms of how you'd met this challenge. This shot is well executed but doesn't make me sit up and think 'Wow!' so overall a 5.

There are some interesting effects at play in this photo. The combination of colours, the light on the yellow vial and of course the smoke all work together really well to portray the chemistry effect. I think your composition is a bit lacking though, I can understand the inclusion of a person in the shot but in this case she is under utilised as she occupy's over half the picture and you can't make her out too well. I think you should have concentrated on your main subject more to underline the Chemistry aspect and if you had wanted to include a human element, a hand or something would have been enough, particularly with subtle lighting. 4 from me.
