_MG_1383by bobonacusComment: I might have cloned out the hair on the sleeve of the arm as well, but I am not sure I would have sharpened the shot anymore than it is now. everything appears to be very sharp to me (warning: one of my problems is not sharpening enough - so I could be wrong, but I don't think I am) |

Jan 01 2010by JaimeVinasComment: AWESOME! Great lighting, love the umbrella and the colors and light shaping are out of this world!!! AMAZING! Can you give me a little insight into your setup? I would love to improve. |

I Love NYby stupidcatComment: Originally posted by paulbtlw: Nicely lit and good colours, the hair is particularly striking but I do agree that the focus is a little off - I tend to use around f/9 in the studio but you can get some really nice work with shallow DOFs but you have to nail the focus on a really important element of the face for it to work. Looking at your settings, a brighter light setting with smaller aperture whilst maintaining your 1/160 shutter speed would probably have helped. I also think you could have cropped the bottom up to the hand/wrist articulation. |
Thanks for the suggestion! I will try this in the next batch of photos I shoot for this side challenge. |

I Love NYby stupidcatComment: Originally posted by smardaz: the lighting looks great steve, recently i got to borrow some flashes and backdrops from a friend and it was great to work with....one of thes days.......if i could offer any criticism it would be the focus on her face seems a bit soft. SandyP told me once that on her ports she goes no wider than 7.1 on the fstop for good sharpness on the subject. |
thanks for the advice - I am going to give it a try! |

I Love NYby stupidcatComment: Originally posted by ErikV: Nice lighting (BTW, which ones did you get?), great expression. I agree, a bit soft -- but if you could do some selective sharpening on the eyes that might take care of much of it.
But what is an Ohio person doing promoting NY? Go Buckeyes and Bearcats!!!! |
I bought some cheap Cowboy Studio monolights. I was quite surprised as to what I have been able to do with them. I appreciate all the comments very much here about the sharpness. This is something I have struggled with for some time. I will go ahead and adjust the f/stop as recommended here...
thanks very much! |
