I really like the shallow DOF on this photo, makes it seem as though its just him and me, a showdown if you will. Perhaps having him centered, or so much blank space on either side harmed you in voting. The S curve is subtle, yet hit me right away. I liked this photo in voting and gave it an 8.

actually, i focused right between his eyes, but yeah, a wider aperature would have helped :) ... he's just really close to the camera. you see, he's only about a foot or so long :]

Looks like he's got a bead on you - very good capture of an s. Looks to me like you focused past a leaf or somesuch that was nearer your lens, which caused the obscured bit on the front of its head, not that your focus was off. If my guess about that is right, a wider aperture may have given you a clearer view of his snout.

This is another of the photos in this challenge that are so close to a great photo. What is missing for me are two things. First I wish it was cropped a bit more on the sides. Second I wish the lighting was a bit better on the head of the snake.
