The shallow DoF puts too much of this image out of focus. Stopping down your aperture would help with this.

Like your idea! Having a child in this certainly makes for a more interesting photo. I think that cropping a bit more of the hands would place more focus on the crystals. Also, it would be better with more light on the crystals.

Good depth of field. I don't mind the cropping of the boy's face, but I would like to have seen both hands and the whole chunk of crystal.
Overall contrast seems bit low, too, but that is only a minor bit.
Should score well enough as it is, though. 8

it doesn't look like you have spent a lot of time thinking about how to set this up and instead looks like you have simply gone into the garden and taken a quick snapshot to use on this challenge. There is nothing particularly of interest in focus and the background is bright and distracting. For these reasons I vote this a 3

Adding a little more contrast would of helped this picture a lot. A levels adjustment would give you the option of darkening the black background slightly and making the apple pop a little more.
