The composition and light is good but the image looks soft. Even if you were going for the soft focus look there isnt really anything of him in focus so it just looks OOF. That doesnt stop it from being a good christmas memory, tho!

2 - It is, but for a Pet Portrait Challenge, I think this would have been much better if the dog was dominating the image more.

I'd tighten the crop closer to the pooch and hydrant. I think it's safe for the hydrant's shadow to run out of the frame sooner if you keep the dog's.

Cute idea!

The lighting is kind of harsh, and I don't connect with the dog in this image - there is no emotion. Now if you had caught him lifting his leg on the hydrant...that would have been great!
