I wanted to make a fun pet portrait, with it not being so serious. So I took my dog to the dog park, and let her run around and do things. The grass was completely dead. It sucked.
But I got some good shots, and decided on this one.

...And yes. She proceeded to urinate on the fire hydrant.

2 - It is, but for a Pet Portrait Challenge, I think this would have been much better if the dog was dominating the image more.

A closer perspective or selective crop might enhance the subject.

I'd tighten the crop closer to the pooch and hydrant. I think it's safe for the hydrant's shadow to run out of the frame sooner if you keep the dog's.

Cute idea!

The lighting is kind of harsh, and I don't connect with the dog in this image - there is no emotion. Now if you had caught him lifting his leg on the hydrant...that would have been great!

Points for idea and composition which gives context. ("Cliche" would have sufficed).

more of a snapshot than a portrait ...

To me, a portrait includes controlling the lighting and setting, and I should be able to see the subject's face. The fire hydrant could work, but wait until the sun is not so harsh. The fence doesn't add anything, and I can't see the dog's face. When I look at this shot, the first thing I see is the hydrant, then the shadow, then the dog.

A tighter crop may have helped out this shot.

Awfully contrasty.
