IMGP1917-sepia-web.jpgby marklovellComment by MacDonald: This one is my fav... I like the sepia and having just the girls heads with their instruments showing is good composition..... it might work to have the spaces between their heads all the same.. and show all the fiddles - of course, you might not have been able to given that you had no lighting at hand.. |

IMGP1936-b&w-grainy-web.jpgby marklovellComment by Elaine: This is my least favorite of the 3. No personality showing, too much hair and not enough eyes. The girl on the right does not have an instrument showing and her head is turned too far to the left. Lighing is also not equal across the shot. |

Study in thought...by marklovellComment by wheeledd: My view of duotones is that they have rich black; this one is too light to fit that mold. But now I'm looking at it again and the lightness appeals to me more. Bumping up. |

He was no match for them....by marklovellComment by marklovell: Thanks to all for the advice and nice comments. For those that are wondering, the whole picture was made from a box of (ship) matches, some superglue, a lighter and the flashlight on my mobile phone.
I started this at 10pm and submitted the photo at 3am GMT. The model took about 3 hours. The biggest trouble was getting the superglue to attach the matchsticks together!
Oh yeah. And I am SO chuffed with the 21st place! Thanks.

He was no match for them....by marklovellComment by loseme: *Critique Club*
Oh I am so lucky I got your photo, this was my favorite! What an awesome setup, I am sure for the time and effort you must be proud of such a photo. The men are absolutely the best part, I love the time you spent. I think a few voters probably would have voted higher if maybe you used a lighter colored lighter because it would have been more apparent. That's probably the biggest downfall is people missed what was in the jail. I like that you used like a spot light to cast the shadows inside the jail, and even the shadows for the men. The ship was a little distracting on the box, maybe it means something and I am just missing the point. Maybe this is a biast critique but I just love the work you did on this piece. Excellent job, of course I think you should have scored higher. |
