I don't know how I missed it in the first place, but if you are using Lightroom 2 then you should have the adjustment brush.
Under the brush settings there is an option for 'Auto Mask'.
When you are applying your adjustments (exposure, clarity, color, etc...) make sure the + in the middle of the brush stays in an area you want adjusted.
Lightroom will try to automatically detect what you are attempting to select and not mask anything else.
For instance, this was shot on a white foam board background. If you notice the background is pure white, this was accomplished by increasing the exposure with the adjustment brush on only the white background. It isn't perfect, as you can see it also lightened some of the highlights, but it speeds things up tremendously.

This looks to be one variety of what is normally called a Garden Spider. I like how you shot it so the legs look almost transparent. And great colors on it.
