This is a GREAT composition. It's sad the camera apparently wouldn't cooperate with you and focus.
Even still, the composition over-rides the technical issues.

There looks to have been lots of light for the picture and enough room to have pulled out some and placed them all in the frame. Definitely should have been in focus though.
If you're in my boat, the focus was due to a lack of camera reach, but in that case, pulling back some and cropping a little smaller would have been a big help perhaps.

Good pic. Too bad about the complete lack of light. It looks like you tried to brighten it up and get some contrast to bring him out, but in so doing you burned your background edges on the trees.
