Bridge to Godby mkirdalComment: Ordinarily I dislike this kind of photo. The haze seems too strong and the water's highlights blown. The structure at the bottom of the ramp is ugly and disturbing and hard to make out. Everything seems cluttered and confusing. Yet somehow it works. What I mean is, ordinarily I'd rate a photo like this about a 3. But I like the rhythm of the lamp posts, the rhythmo fo the guardrail posts, the rhythm of the bumpers on the pier, and the rhythm of the windows in the mosque. There is even a kind of uneven rhythm in the pedestrian traffic. And the double meaning - which would normally force a photo with this many elements to be too cluttered - really works. It reminds us somehow of the gap between the modern secular world and the medieval religious one. This very gap and an attempt to bridge the gap is embodied in the bridge itself. It is of modern concrete and steel construction, but the guardrail has a beautiful byzantine design. And the haziness appropriately obscures our view of heaven.. The photo's concept is extraordinarily strong. |

Under the bridgeby chik0325Comment: Super. I love the way the arch of the bridge is echoed in the arc of the roof. The lighting is exquisite. |

U.S.-Mexico Bridge over Rio Grande Riverby eaglebeckComment: I am trying to find a single photogenic element in this photo. I imagine that in just the right light and from just the right angle those big round concrete piers could be interesting. Perhaps that's what you saw? The green roof and yellow striped deck are interesting, though possibly cluttered. The fact that the road and the river curve are interesting - but all the other stuff in the photo keep us from seeing this pre-development beauty (which would have been almost impossible to capture well). Finally, the lighting is too harsh for most digital cameras. The highlights in the Border Patrol car are all blown. And the shadows beneath the bridge are all black. Better luck next time. |

Pentabridgeby siquisComment: Architecturally this is a very strong bridge, taken in very good light. I happen to find the people distracting (though what is one to do?) And I wonder if the photo wouldn't be just a bit better from a step or two closer up. |

Musical Bridgeby fifieldComment: If this competition were not about bridges, I think I'd vote to have the focus be closer to the bridge than the bottom of the fingerboard (if that's what it's called.) But if the photo really was not taken for this competition, it is doubly hard to undersand the point at which it focusses (unless it is a physical limitation of the equipment.) The composition and lighting are very strong - I like the warm and cool lighting. The top 20% iof the photo adds nothing. |

Vanishing Pointby genghisComment: Remarkable contrast between industrial wasteland and nature's ability to engulf and redeem the worst of our aesthetic sins. Also I like the water. |

My last destinationby quzailanComment: I am reminded of a feng shui principle of combining round and square elements. I like the color - even the oversaturation. The fact that the sky is pure white is fine since it is mostly filled with palm trees. And I appreciate the photographer's choice of not chopping off the light fixture at the top of the standard. There is something different, refreshing about this take on bridges |

Columbia-Wrightsville Bridgeby eggvComment: Strongly architectural bridge, but the angle seems to do justice neither to the repeating architectural elements on each span nor to the repeating spans themselves. Mostly the photo is water, sky, and piers - each of which is uninteresting. |

Bridging the gapby trainComment: Very nice idea. And nicely realized. Great bokeh. I wonder where one finds this flora and fauna in early February. I suppose it must be a submission from the southern hemisphere. |
