Dustpan Technology

Dustpan Technology

Comment:
Without the title, this image would not survive the challenge interpretation, but it is exactly worded to force me into that mind of thinking. This is dustpan technology and as such, the low tech works. The soft focus and highlights almost lend to an ethereal presentation that could be a marketing tool - the latest low tech wonder for the household. Great job on interpretation and composition and leading title-generation.

Natural Light

Good use of shadows to enhance the focus of subject matter. The candle seems to be less of the subject than the book and glasses however. Nice balance of placements of the elements, but the left side of the book is distracting, makes me think that it is going to close on you. Positioning the glasses across the binding may have been effective in thwarting that, but would have introduced a different crop or placement of elements that would defeat the shadowing. I see the low tech element but it seems overwhelemed by the book as the focal point. Nice subtle border and choice of accent color.

Stove-Top Popcorn Popper and 3D Glasses

Definitely invokes a feeling of nostalgia and something of a low tech subject is captured in the popper. The image elements are situated as to require the crop that has been chosen but the size of each subject and the enormous negative space detract considerably from the impact of the whole. A tighter crop, larger elements and maybe fewer popcorn boxes would greatly improve this shot.

Interestingly enough, without the hands to define it as a watch, the technology of the subject becomes almost non-existant to me. It now seems nothing more than a medal of honor, a trophy of some sort. The blue above, only adding to that feeling. I like the angle chosen to shoot from and chosen for teh subject itself, the DOF is great and keeps the whole in focus and the lighting allows it to gently melt into the background. Overall a pleasant image, but distracting in the color above and lacking somehow in the tech arena but only because of the missing hands. Desat the blue above tho and this image seems to me to be a winner for an abstract wallhanging.

Basic but LOUD

Basic but LOUD

Not much lower tech wake up device than this wonder. Good lighting and long exposure of second hand and ringing bells. No question that this is a loud subject! Very clear focus and the noise in the shadows provides a graininess that I find interesting rather than detracting. Up angle gives it a larger than life feel that adds to the 'noise' of the alarm. Good Job, very high marks.

I am not reminded of low technology when seeing this pump. Instead, it invokes the 'good old days' or antique sentiments, nostalgia. The height of the pump vs the tree and the rest of the crop are well thought and create a nice balance against the 90 degree corner in the background. The white car is a huge distraction and looks very out of place, perhaps a tighter crop would fix this, but could defeat other aspects the composition. The green tone and overexposed sky do little to nostalgify this for me, but perhaps some grain and a sepia toning with no car would give a more solid 'old' feel to it.

That darn wind

Beyond a doubt, candlelight somehow always invokes low tech to me. The halos around the flame are nice and soft, the smoke wispy, but not natural enough. It appears at one point the smoke is going naturally to the high and on the candle right next to it, somewhat sideways, whereas the unlit candle's smoke seems to be going in the opposite direction and is obviously 'been blown out' It seems hard to evaluate the framing of the subject, and then I see the imbalance of three 'top' candles versus the two 'bottom' candles one of which, now unlit adds even more imbalance to the whole. The focus and DOF in this low light shot is very good, but the smoke at the base of the candle in the center makes a blurring feature that should be removed. I feel distracted by the elements in this shot which has a strong negative impact on the whole.

Sundials remind me of calculus. Simple in nature and yet somehow quietly complex. This image conjures those feelings again and yet it is without question mechanical and low tech at the same time. The angle of the shot and framing in the cropped negative space is well executed. Just the right DOF and gold on black choice only adds to the whole. A few spots that seem over lighted and the center 'thing' above the glass seems far too shadowy. Overall a great interpretation of the challenge from the viewer's seat and solid marks for composition with only a minor hit on some technical distraction.

The Tools of My Father

The Tools of My Father

Comment:
Another old tool shot. The elements are here, wood handles, age marks, simple hand mechanics and the wooden toolbox adds something to the whole, but the framing of the whole seriously detracts from the elements. The box itself overwhelms the pieces and takes attention away from them rather than enhancing the feeling of age. Perhaps taking all of the tools, rearranging them in only the top cubbies and closing in on the whole would have a better impact on the presentation of an otherwise good challenge interpretation.

Technology In The Rigging

Technology In The Rigging
by Curious

Comment:
I lack any familiarty with sailing and rigging technology, but ropes and pulleys in some way do lend to the inference of technology and low technology at that. I like the choice of subject matter in the coloring and balance of whites, blues, browns. The angle is interesting and DOF just deep enough to draw the eye to the subject, while implying the complexity of the whole. Very nice, by the end of this little critique, the whole had moved considerably higher than my first impression!
