Goal for 2010
1. Complete my Photo A Day project - In other words, post a new photo every day on my blog.
That's it! I'm keeping it simple!
About
I grew up in the Midwest and during college lived in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I have always had a love of nature and am an avid backpacker. While I've never had formal training in photography, I studied drawing and painting during high school at the Cranbrook Academy in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan.
I currently live in Upstate New York with my wife and work as a software engineer.
My Journey to Photography
When I was young, my grandfather passed away and my grandma gave me his old camera kit. I don't remember what was in there, but there were multiple old lenses and an old, solid, Canon film camera. I played around with it for a couple years but the back leaked light and I could never really learn much with it. Soon becoming frustrated, I traded the whole kit for a Minolta Film SLR and lens. This was great since I could shoot manual or automatic and soon learned more than I ever had with the fully manual camera. Looking back, I probably should have held on to that old camera as I'm sure it was worth some good money and I probably got ripped off trading it.
After my father passed away in 2000, I dropped the Minolta while moving out of my mom's house on the way to my Sophomore year of College. The battery door broke and would no longer stay closed without the assistance of duct tape. With my studies and working full time, I drifted away from photography until after graduation. My wife really loves pictures and we decided to go digital and settled on a Canon point and shoot. Satisfied for a few years when we decided to take a cruise to Alaska this last May, I started craving the ability to take amazing photographs of this (possibly) once in a lifetime opportunity. Doing much research, I ended up with my current Nikon D50 and lenses.
So there you have it. While I may not be a great photographer, I have been expanding my knowledge and spending hours pouring over photos in both books and online. I stumbled across DPC a while ago and finally decided that to take my photography to the next level, I owed it to myself to join and get some constructive criticism. I know my post processing skills are lacking and that's something I hope to correct in the upcoming months. |
