I'm quite new to photography, but I love it. I've always enjoyed observing nature, and now I have a hobby that marries with it nicely.
No Bait, no Bars. That's my policy for taking pictures of animals. I try to catch my subjects' individuality, in their habitat, without disturbing them. I refuse to go to zoos or an animal farms to take pictures, and I refuse to leave food out to try to attract them ("no bait, no bars"). I do agree that some zoos are great for research that can benefit the animals, but I'm not a scientist, so I don't go.
I don't want to habituate animals to people in any way, and that's why the "no bait" part of my philosophy. It usually ends up bad for both parties involved, and furthermore, the animal almost always gets the worst of it.
I encourage all people taking pictures of wild animals to follow my philosopy. Even when I do get close to an animal, I always grab a few shots, and then leave, becuase they may be stressed by my presence. More importantly, I don't want them to get the idea that being close to humans is good.
Finally, remember that mother nature won't stop something from happening just because we think it's tragic. Just because 9 of 10 individuals will act in a predictable fashion, it doesn't mean you won't encounter the 1 who will act unexpectedly! PLEASE be careful!
Happy picture taking!
Cheers!
M.S.
(Oh! One more thing - I gladly welcome any feedback from anyone, positive or negative, so don't be shy!)
