Biography: I am relatively new to photography. I wouldn't describe myself as a photographer..not yet anyway. I am a grad student and I was carrying a point and shoot with me during my field research outings taking pictures of whatever struck my fancy. I wore out the department cybershot and finally purchased my own canon elph sd100. After a while, I had amassed quite a few photos and people kept telling me that I was good at it. I am not convinced yet. I joined this site (in Feb. of 2005) for 3 reasons--

    1. honest critique from people who don't know me. I don't want to be one of those people who is deluded because they believe everything their mom says about them. (see "American Idol--worst of" for examples of this phenomenon)

    2. Practice. I view the challenges as homework assignments. I figure that by doing them, I will learn stuff and get practice (even though all I have is a high end point and shoot). Although scoring high, winning, and making big bucks on prints would be all good, I don't expect it. I intend to do my best on each challenge and get better at this over time.

    3. I need to learn something about photography. I found out about the rule of thirds because someone told me I was very good about knowing when to break it. I was like, "rule of thirds? what's that?" lol. They said, "just keep taking pictures". I also need to learn how to use image editing tools. I currently only have photoshop elements. I don't see affording the real thing anytime soon. The tutorials here are great and most seem to apply to elements.

I have a jar in my office that I stash money into. I have 200 give or take so far. When I hit 800 in a couple of years, I am going to start shopping for a real camera. In the meantime, I am going to find out how far I can push my little canon elph (which btw I love, even if it isn't a big fancy mega digi).

Don't be afraid to tell me I suck, just so long as you tell me why.
