essay, part 8:

I worked very hard to take this photo, juggling two dog leashes and a camera, but this photo doesn’t feel like it’s mine at all. I am stunned and awed by this photo, how it captures so much about my two dogs and who they are... but I can also imagine seeing it as someone who doesn’t know these dogs at all, and still feel a sublime mundaneness about it, the apotheosis of the ordinary. I was not a genius when I took this photo. I was just a foolish amateur trying to fit two dogs and a cow into frame. I don’t know how this photo composed itself. I don’t know what light makes it alive.

original notes:

I was somehow able to walk two dogs on two leashes and take this picture at the same time.

Slight blend of topaz black and white on overlay, which helps the contrast a bit. That's all.

I so love how the dogs emerge from the flare. Their dance is just as lively.

Not sure the leashes work for me, glowing in the sun. I do like the cow watching the dogs.

What a great picture! It will be impossible for all those sad, simple souls who blather on about 'distractions', 'blurry', 'no clear subject', 'rule-of-turds', 'lens flare', and all that rubbish to fail to recognize the quality of this photograph. I've seen some wonderful, exuberant, original photographs that were shamefully overlooked at DPC, but surely not this time? This one is just so unequivocally damn good that it must penetrate.

Your picture is a celebration of the photograph, rather than of photography. In fact it's pretty much anti-photography, and that's always a very good thing in a photograph.

An emphatic 10 for you, a 'Thank You', and the following posthumous* Purple Heart , I mean Order of the Thumb:

(* the 'posthumous' Purple Heart is not connected with the well-known mad poet and twisted art critic of the same name)

The beast behind the gate doesn't much care for the ones in front! To my eye, the focus is soft but this may be what you were chasing.

interesting subject... maybe if you'd gotten down level with the dogs you could have a very interesting photo?

Ha! What fun and energy, all being overseen by that great overseer behind the fence, like that guy in the Wizard of Oz.
