Too much contrast. Shodow on the bank detracts form the image.

I don't get it. Even with the title. I know there is something in there you are trying to tell me; it just isn't coming through. Life (Ok, there are plants and trees), death (I don't see that here), and hope for the living (Where do you derive that from this image?). Maybe there is something about that odd shape in the water (like a piece of discarded metal) that I'm not seeing. What is it?
