I think this is the first time I half stage a photo. I came up with a oretty detailed idea of a little boy having a tea party for his toys and the photograph of his mum. It made me a bit sad so I was about to submit something else, but after watching a similar situation in a documentary, I decided to give it a go.
Natural light in our bedroom is normally great, but not today, so I had to resort to a flash and a snoot which I made out of a cornflakes box. I never ask my boy to pose or smile for the camera, so I just engaged him in a make-believe tea party and snapped away.
It did not come up as I had devised, but we both had great fun :)

Thoughts of loneliness were my first impression. Evoking emotion is a joy of photography; thus, set up or not, this image speaks to me.

This strikes me as very sad; the child looks unhappy, coupled with the low light and shadows it makes me think this is meant to portray lost family? The photograph of the woman with a plate in front of her is poignant and puts me in mind that this child has lost their mother and is still trying to involve her in the tea party. Whether this was the intent or not, it makes for quite a moving scene. Technically the image is a bit noisy (most noticeable on the wall) but I like it.
