Well, below average scores on this in the first hour. Having voted on all, I see that most people think an HDR image should look surreal. Although, I observed a few excellent efforts, but most were "not natural". HDR can and should be as one saw it with your eyes. Those that are overcooking their images mock the process and are about three years behind in their thinking. I sort of knew a natural landscape image would be panned. So, I take the low votes as a backhanded compliment.

The optimal exposure difference between the highlights represented by the snow in the direct sunlight and the shadows in the shade of the dark rocks is about 10 camera stops. Our cameras can only capture about 5 stops of light between highlights and shadows without losing detail on one end of the histogram or the other. This image is only possible with HDR blending of images exposed separately for the highlights, midtones and shadows. The result is an image which does not look like HDR at all. That was my goal.

I marked the comment "helpful" which alleged this image was a snapshot of the forest. Hardly a snapshot! Carefully chosen and composed scene, it is. But, at least one person was not impressed.

A cluster of "4" votes have knocked down the score today, on the last day of voting. |

With all due respect, this is a carefully chosen and precisely composed landscape scene. It is hardly a snapshot. |

Beautiful scene, captured perfectly. Anyone who shot film for years is aware of the light range limitations and knows how disapointing high contrast shots could be. Along comes an incredible tool like digital HDR to save the day and all anyone wants to do with it is turn every shot into the cheesy grunge look! Thank you for showcasing HDR's potential! |

Outstanding. Not only is this a beautiful photo, it's a clinic in when and how to use HDR. Crisp and clear, no halos whatsoever mixed in the white bark vs. blue sky, excellent detail and depth throughout, masterfully exposed. Excellent photo and absolutely perfect for this challenge. |

Nice image, I might have liked more foreground and less sky, but what do I know. Good luck. |
