This past weekend was Homecoming at my college. They always have an alumni gathering at the boathouse, and the braver of the alumni head out in a shell and take on the freshmen. In this case, the women's eight is getting ready to go out - to take on a shell of alumni women. They are, of course, not allowed to actually beat the alumni.... :-)
It was a great morning. We'd had a week of rain and overcast skies, but Saturday was clear and bright, albeit a tad windy. This is the Muskingum River; it empties into the Ohio just below the finishing line of the course for Marietta's crews (both college and high school). The Ohio River on this day was a muddy, rolling, whitecapping mess after the week's rains. The Muskingum, though, was calm by comparison. I do recall one weekend's races during my college days where the Ohio was so violent it was washing back upstream into the Muskingum, and as shells crossed the finish they ran into rolling waves, took on tons of water, and started to sink! I believe the finish line was moved upstream after the first race... :-)
