Late night walk around Hull town centre, I spoted this discarded shoping Trolley left outside a Solicitors office. Taken from tripod. Could not do much with the overblown light.

I didn't vote on this challenge so this is the first time I've seen this. I love the shopping cart -- it's a perfect touch.

As to the blown-out street lamp, you do have some detail there, so it's not that bad.

I've tried photos in a similar vein and have had some success combining shots.

I do one shot as the meter in my DSLR tells me. Generally, this gives me good detail in the street, buildings, windows, etc. Then I take a second shot at 1/125" or 1/50" or until I have decent detail in the street light (or what ever else is blown out). Then I go home and blend the layers in Photoshop CS5. I use the long exposure as the base and layer the short exposure over it. I then fade the short exposure shot a little until the light looks good, and use a very soft brush to erase the rest of the short exposure layer. Flatten the image, and I've usually got a pretty good looking street light. (IMNSHO 8P) I've also used it for nocturnal landscapes/seascapes when the moon is blown out.

Someone was frustrated! :)
The conversion to Black and White is a good idea - it makes us notice the 3 main elements in the picture without getting distracted by the yellow color cast. Makes me look for a story behind the scene.
However, it doesn't quite say City to me - not talking about technicalities, but just the feel of it. Good luck.

A fantastic captured scene - a whole story in a moment of capture.
