Challenge: Film Noir (Advanced Editing VII)
Camera: Canon EOS-450D Rebel XSi
Lens: Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II
Location: Melling
Date: Aug 7, 2011
Aperture: F8
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1/15
Galleries: Black and White, Self Portrait
Date Uploaded: Aug 9, 2011

first self portrait so it will clearly score maximum marks... or have a record number of 1's.

I used a single work light with make shift barn doors as my light source to the right to create the shadow and a flash with dome diffuser. timing the cards was very hit and miss but fun to do up until the point my camera battery needed recharging (that made me speed up)

Lightroom 3
PSE8 High pass filter, clone out blemishes on the backdrop.
Topaz denoise.

most of all i saw a lot of cool photos in the Noir style and had fun, so if it tanks then all will not be lost.

I gave this an 8, one of my favourite images from the challenge and I'm amazed it didn't make top 10! Looking at the voting spread all I can guess is certain voters had very specific expectations of what what film noir should be and voted lower because of that.

Cool shot, not drawn to the gun immediately because the cards are cool but then... BANG! 8

The flying cards are fun. Very distracting from the gun :-)

I don't know how you did this, but it's very impressive. An explanation of your technique after the challenge would be great :) Also, good use of shadow. My only critique is there is a bit of blown out area on the subject's shoulder where the card is flying up.
