Even if this image was the worst image in the world, I would still be entering it in this free study because of the price I paid to take it.
I was taking pictures in a wild meadow for the Senses challenge (which isn't scoring too well) when all of a sudden I heard a rustle and found myself literally 10 feet away from this gal.
We stared at each other for a good 5 seconds in shock, and then I immediately started whispering so as not to appear as a silent predator (a trick I learned from hahn). I walked 10 feet back to retrieve my camera, changed my lens, changed my settings and luckily the deer had stayed, and in fact was grazing. I then spent a good 5 minutes following this deer around in the wild meadow, all the while whispering or whistling silly tunes. Eventually the deer decided that while I didn't seem to scary, it was just a bit too uncomfortable to keep having to look out for me while grazing.
While this was happening, I was being destroyed by mosquitos but I decided that was a price I was willing to pay for some good pictures of a wild deer.
3 days later....
I wake up completely itchy to find that I am covered from head to toe (literally) in poison oak rashes, that I must have obliviously walked through while paying attention to the deer.
I am still not recovered from those rashes and they are a complete nuisance.
No longer a "price I was willing to pay", but I paid it none the less.
I do like this image, but really, it wasn't worth the poison oak.
So even though I have better images for this month, I am entering this one, because gosh darn it, if I paid so much for this image, then the world better see it!

After Challenge:
I am very disappointed with this score. I mean, I get it isn't the best in the world. But a sub5? Really? Its a sharp picture of a wild deer with decent lighting and Rule of Thirds Compositions. Sure I chopped the feet off, but still.
I have not scored a sub5 since September 2010, and I can't believe that this is the image to break that streak. I think this is a decent image. |
