Perfect timing for this speed challenge, as there were daily thunderstorms across the Front Range (Colorado / Denver area) for the past week-plus and I'd been lackadaisical in trying to capture the action. When the speed challenge email hit my inbox there happen to be a massive overnight storm moving through with the most active lightning display thus far; literally strike after strike after strike turning night into day.

I referenced the following tutorial in setting up to capture this image (along with about 25 other "keepers"): How To Photography Lightning, weatherscapes.com

Note that I'm on holiday/vacation and more than 5000 miles away from my PC, so had to employ a "mobile workflow". I wish I could have processed normally using PS CS5, as I think the image could be much stronger and advanced editing means I could really make it pop. Unfortunately, the best I could do was transfer the 5D MkII RAW image file to my iPad using Apple's Camera Connection Kit, perform minimal processing with Nik's snapseed app then save it off as hi-res jpeg. I then used another app to resize (per dpc dimension requirements) before submitting.

It will break my heart if the lightning is not real, otherwise this is my personal choice for the blue ribbon.

My score: 10

Please tell me which tutorial showed you how to get that lighting bolt to come down from the sky. ;-) Nice capture!
