 Originally shot through a magnifying glass, old school macro.
Brought in from RAW what is essentially the blurry picture you see here.
Added a curves layer over the reds to lighten the flower. Hue/Sat to mute and de-bloody the reds.
Dodging and burning some highlights and shadows.
Added warmth.
I expect 5.2 or so, possibly less in this challenge with some of the Canon Electron MicroscopeL lenses we'll see.

Not sure I agree about the crop comments, but that's my preference. I liked the "en plein air" or "out in the open" aspect of this perspective. It is not so much a shot of an ant's nostril as it is an ant and his environment.

4.7? I can understand your disappointment with this score. Sometimes I think it's important to know when to disregard the score though. For a stock-look or landscape style shot my belief is the score is a fairly decent assessment of an image (usually). When it comes to "photography as art" though, which seems to be a hot subject in the forum right now, the score really means nothing and I think individual assessments of an image are all that's important.

Man, was this one underrated! But then I notice as I'm going through that I valued environment and slice-of-life shots more than most of the voters. Still really love this :-)
