Well, that was a very nicely stable score after the first few swings.. Thanks a ton everyone for the kind votes!

I've just read the comments below and wow, didn't you ever get a co-operative little bug! I haven't tried too many of these really close macro shots of insects because I just do not have the patience and the little mongrels keep flying away on me. Oh how I wish I could capture a few this good. What flash/lighting did you use? The comments below indicate (and I agree) that it's a tiny bit harsh, but I'd keep that if it meant the difference between 'OK detail' and this much detail :) Great shot. Love the iridescent shine on both bugs.

Front legs do look a bit over sharpened. More-so, highlight a marquee around the area and I'll bet you'll see some very high highlights. So, it may not entirely be over sharpened but pushed blowing out some contrast.

One of my favorites. I love the capture of predator and prey. I thought it would do better but this was a tough challenge. Congrats on your top 10 finish.

Thanks, and I'll share my secret with you.. But you gotta keep it quiet. - I'm a bug whisperer..- ;) lol!

Actually in truth, the thing used me like a cheap date, was all over me and clearly was just looking for dinner. It actually jumped on my lens and then nabbed the insect it's eating above - I had to set it on a leaf, thing was super cooperative, probably got 150 good shots of it eating.. In hindsight I should have chosen a more interesting and less natural setting, like a neon pink tiny flower... ;)

And then some bird or mantis or spider will come along and eat the big bug! Flash (I think) did a nice job of bringing out the iridescence of various bug bits and creating pretty bokeh highlights.

The flash seems rather harsh, i.e. you need a diffuser of some kind. But it's a cool shot of the flies.
