I went with medieval symbolism, especially relating to knowledge, which is not an unalloyed good.
The apple and the snake, which stand for the knowledge of good and evil, when man became aware. The lens and the sacred books, which shift and expand insight beyond what can normally be seen. The candle which both illuminates and implies limited life. And lastly the mirror and the skull, which provides reflection and insight, and with understanding, the understanding of the limits of time and the inevitability of death.
The predominant red color, crimson red in medieval Christian imagery symbolizes the presence of God and the blood of martyrs. It is the Christian liturgical color for Pentecost and represents atonement and humility.

Just a touch too much background IMO. These kind of "vanitas" seem to be better when more condensed or with a very dark background. As I play with the position of the picture on my screen, I find it very effective if the entire top, from the top of the apple would be cropped (the skull would have to be repositioned somehow).
Of course that I am splitting hair now but I do it only with really good images. (I voted early but had no time for comments) |

There are so many mediocre shots in this challenge- but this is not one of them; this challenge, as you have shown, requires some set up; nice lighting, nice work. |

Seems to me I've seen this snake before. Yes. On someone's head :-)
Awesome image. Great light. |

Nice shot-still, i think some objects could have been better placed and the image could have been croped in a few angles to give it a more sinister look. |
