This is a fantastic picture and I think that it should have been in the top three, it's a unique picture. The choice of B/W adds a cool feel to this and emphasises the composition. The guy in this would have been a perfect candid by himself but the billboard behind him adds the WOW factor, great composition and capture of this. The graduation of dark to light from left to right brings you into the picture and brings the viewers eyes to the two faces. To be honest, I have no recommendations to improve this picture, the lighting, exposure and focus all seem perfect, composition is fantastic and the mood of it has impact! Congrats on 7th place!

What a great juxtaposition! I love the upthrust , somehow vain, nose of the model in the background against the handsome reality of the living person before you. Great catch!

Excellent portrait. Really like the contrast between the foreground and background images.

Pretty cool the way the noses lined up like that! I like this.

I can't explain why I like this, but I do. Good shot. His expression says a lot, but the "photo" in the background carries a huge air of mystery that keeps me staring at the shot. 9

Very nice candid moment you captured. B&W works very good on this picture. Good luck!

Very nice portrait. Did he know you were taking his picture? It has a good, candid feel to it. Good contrasts, both in lighting and with the second face in the background. 8 Swash

This is simply an awesome portrait. The angle of his jaw is very powerful, yet is expression is one of a more subdued look. The black and white works very well here, I think. Great work.

It's amazing the way you caught the parallel between the guy's profile and whatever is in the background! Beautiful, rich tones, and great diffuse lighting on the guy's face. The framing/composition is tight. I like it a lot! 10.

This is a nice, candid im assuming, portrait. The wall art behind definately adds to the shot.

This is definitely another of my favorites from the week. I love the background in this shot -- both the face and the slanted grey, cutting through the white. The portrait itself is very nice. Your subject really pops out of the background, and I think that's what makes the shot. The left side of the image seems to fade off pretty dark, and I'm not sure if that was intentional. 9.

This is an amazingly good candid shot, and the use of b&w is the perfect choice for this. The framing so that the background face echoes the main subject is either very well spotted, or incredibly good luck :o) Perhaps a touch more light on the jacket would have helped, but given that its a candid I know that you would have had little control over that. I am curious however as to what the background is, since the edges of it are very clean, and there appears to be a foldline down part of it...

I love how the 2 faces are similar. Different, yet similar. The angle of the face in the background is nice. Nothing distracting. Very clear, well focused shot. Angle and framing/cropping are great. I like the darkness (lighting) of the man. I think that it adds a lot with the background lighting being lighter and the lighting on him being being darker. a nice contrast that way. Great portrait. Good luck in the challenge.

Very nice Candid, and very interesting with the (photo?) behind this guy. You really did a nice job here, and choosing to put it in black and white was a great idea! Personally I think it may have been more effective if you would have cropped off more of the top, possibly to right above his head, but thats just me. Good luck! - 8

I like this shot very much. I was trying to figure out if that was a poster or advertisement of some kind in the background, but whatever it is, it adds an interesting element to the shot. You've captured the individual beautifully. 9. lhall

I love the composition, the two contrasting faces overlaping each other; briliant! I especially like the expressions, one of concentrated observasion, and one of calm exhosibition. Well done with the choice of B&W. The use of available light is also very impressive.

Very powerful profile shot. It looks good in B&W. I also like the picture in the background.

I love how the billboard (?) behind him echos his profile. Very nice informal portrait. 7

I really like the face against the face in the background! The white burnout on the right side is a bit distracting. I assume you couldn't crop that out. DPz

good composition with the black to gray to white and also the two faces. good tone and contrast. very nice.

Great candid. Posed perfectly against the background image. How do you go about getting candids like this? Do you ask permission to use their picture afterward? What if they notice you taking their picture? I never seem to have the guts to take this sort of picture. Overall great picture, well done.

Perfect DOF. Going black and white was a perfect decision for this shot. You really did a good job capturing the moment.

Very neat shot. Well done, love the b&w. Good work.
12/09/2002 12:44:19 PM
Great catch if this is someone that you did not have pose. I love how the background photo frames the portrait. Great color, great lighting. The white sections are a bit distracting but cropping them out would have meant a loss of more important elements of the shot.

Well done! Excellent candid and great photowork. I love the poster in the background and how it's almost like a "shadow" of the subject. Great great great!

Really neat juxtaposition of the guy\'s face and the poster(?) in the background.

Nice candid ! I love the b/g of the store display. I also think the b/w tone was a good choice. Shiiizzzam
