 One of those things... I was sitting in my living room watching TV when I happened to look out onto the parking lot. There was a huge heron stalking around between the trees. I grabbed my camera, which happened to be sitting on the table. It had the 50mm fixed lens on it. I went out and shot the heron with this lens that was totally not suited. Got a few shots - heron flew, stood, walked, etc. Nothing exciting.

But then I heard a big noise overhead and looked up. There were hundreds of birds flying pretty high. They were making an enormous racket. First I thought they were geese, but they were not flying in any formation, there were way too many, and the photos revealed that they were gulls.

Here's one of those images. Processed in many ways to create a dream-like quality. I have zero prediction on how this will do.

After Challenge: I was just not thinking when I edited this. The flood filter did me in.

Now that I see the challenge results, I see I would have had the Red by a landslide. Ouchie. However, I was much heartened by the wonderful comments, the favs, and how this image seemed to touch people. Thanks for all the support!

oh haha the flood filter. i was like, what on earth is wrong with this image? well, nothing is wrong with the PICTURE of course. it's very dreamy and beautiful! oh well, so much for rules, eh? :)

Ghostly, ethereal, surreal, lovely. The tones you've achieved are splendid, and you processed the rays perfectly. They're visible but retail their ephemeral quality. I like how all the birds are heading in the same direction, although it might have been more visually interesting to have them in a less structured arrangement - something over which you had no control. Just musing.

This is gorgeous and definitely something I would hang up on my wall. I love the rays of light, and the composition of the birds is very pleasing. Not to mention the squiggly reflections in the water, which is very interesting. 9

To me this is what fine art is all about in a photography sense. I love the surreal effect from the water reflection. What I like the most is that there is no need for quirky off-beat subjects or dramatic post processing to give this image a total abstract feel.
Congratulations this in my view should be on the front page.
