The subject matter makes a blunt statement that's hard to ignore -- one that doesn't need any help. For that matter, the dark processing was unnecessary and only detracts.

I'm trying to think of the photographer who took the photos of the families during the Dust Bowl of the 30's. This is certainly reminiscent of her work, although a touch less harsh in the focus. Maybe a bit contrived, unless this woman really has been abused. I like that it speaks to our social consciousness, either way.
