This is one of the many abandoned buildings/houses on the plains of eastern Colorado. Most of these structures are failed homesteads, broken dreams littered amongst the missile silos you find scattered along the landscape. The plains themselves hold a special place in my heart, and I love going out there and exploring their vast emptiness. This particular house is not all that far from a major road, along an unmarked dirt road that leads off. The roof is more gone than there, the floor is unstable enough that I didn't actually step inside, for fear of falling into the basement, and the foundation has been removed on one side of the house. Yet, amongst the roosting pigeons it still stands. People have brought old CRT monitors here to shoot, and they sit in the living room riddled with bullet holes.
I am particularly fond of the dilapidation alongside the pristine view of the country. I somewhat wish it wasn't March and the grass was green instead of brown, perhaps I'll reshoot in a month or two.
The area as a whole is something I love, but I'm determined to get a decent score while shooting in the area. To date, my efforts haven't been successful, and I know that the bleakness isn't something most like. It isn't beautiful in the normal sense. But the starkness of everything is marvelous, something that's hard to describe. |

Ah, a fellow abandonment buff. Gorgeous image, Derek. I completely understand - and share - your feelings about this stuff. |

Derek - now this is really really cool. I'm glad to see you got some love in the comments. The view of the landscape to the right is soooo intriguing. Makes me want to sit and wait for something that might stroll past the window. Because of the view from that window, I'd like to have seen less of the wall on the left. Maybe put that corner on the 1/3 line? I look forward to seeing more of what you get from this area! |

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.
Positives: One of those pictures that is more than the sum of its parts. The scene through the window makes for a beautiful abstract landscape in its own right and those streaks of light bottom left are lovely. The walls add to the wonder - as much as by what they obscure as what they show.
Critical stuff: Nothing
Overall: A most pleasing image. |
