took the picture in sunset light. put leeks on some dark fabric outside. manual settings, like a pro!

no crop, like a pro! calculations to b/w (overlay of red and green channels) that really made the fabric disappear into blackness. did topaz creative detail filter to make it look sharper. burned out two tiny distracting highlights remaining in the fabric. resize and sharpen.

could not have done the above with basic editing.

It's not as sharp or as clean as Weston, but it does have a certain staidness to it. a sort of unassuming glow.

I so love this. One of your more "mundane" entries to be sure, but so graceful and tender, with a wonderful tonal range.

Greetings from the Critique Club! You asked for an in-depth critique for your image, and here it is:

First, I really adore this image. It's a leek and it's not. It has mystique. It made me look at it for a long time, traveling up and down the lines. The light and dark play are most outstanding - you really captured the deep, rich tones we see in Weston photos.

So why did this not score higher? Frankly, I'm not entirely sure. The composition could have something to do with it - the off-center, meandering out of the frame of that leek. That's all I can come up with. Your focus is good, the tones are good, the light is good, the subject is good. Who knows what scores well and why here? I certainly don't for the most part.

I'm sorry if this is not constructive enough. I'm also biased by the fact that I'm particularly fond of the image and if I had voted, would have given it an 8 with ease. And look at all your awesome comments!

From me, congratulations on an image that is thoughtful and compelling. Screw the score.

Best, Alicia

I leek the way it straddles itself so purposefully.

I want to touch the image and feel the texture. Colors just as it should be IMHO.

A playful title. Unassuming glow, yes, but very much about the uniform texture with a wide variety of tones. Very enjoyable.

Neat. I like your subject for the challenge. It seems like a pretty original take while still capturing the Weston style in an obvious way. Well done.

Nice light. Good contrast. My first impression was of leaves of corn.
