No pressure - I suggested the challenge so I felt like I had to produce a good entry to justify the suggestion I put forward.

Thanks to LaraO for her time, effort and make up skills. Also thanks to my loving wife for helping with props whilst keeping a crying baby happy.

This turned out to be such a nice fun shoot and I have come away with some lovely images and some good lessons learned along the way... both lighting and editing. That is a banana leaf in the BG - lit up by a few flourecent lights behind it (otherwise it looked a very dark green).

I hope I have emulated Manny's style well enough to keep the voters happy - but even if I didn't - I really enjoyed this so it was worth the effort.

Editing: (lots LOL)
Slight tweaks in RAW (exposure and colour), import to CS3, noise reduction, spot removal, levels, more colour adjustments, Gaussian blur to skin, screen mode for eyes, sharpening, glow to highlights, some more sharpening, reopen in Raw to tweak scarf colour, SFW.

I really like the end result and I am hoping for a 6+ score although I know the voters will be very critical as to what Manny's style is. I think Manny's style has changes a bit over the years from what I have seen. I guess I went with his older style of a woman with a good deal of make up and a scarf but I do like the end result so I'm happy with my entry.

while i like her intense gaze, i find the lighting a bit flat. Maybe more glow in the skin. 7/10

I like this. Very sharp, colorful and great expressions. The bright green in the background looks a bit harsh to me

Hey Steve. I voted this a 6. The good - your model certainly has lovely eyes. They don't feel overly pimped out but pretty much just right. Her makeup job is lovely as well (good match with the veil) and the doodad on her forehead is a nice touch. IMO a very good edit job on her face. Bouncing back and forth from another image it seems that her skin tone may be just a tad bit on the orange side. The indifferent - her pose for some reason just feels a bit static and unconnecting. It's not terrible, but she just doesn't seem to be connecting with me. Feels a bit too generic and unemotional. Maybe some slight angle so that she is pushed into having to look into the lens, either from slightly above or from an angle rather than just setting her right in front. Librodo often comes at you from an interesting angle. The bad - that green is wretched on my monitor. You have this lovely model with great sharpness and color balance between her eyes and the veil and then this bright flourescent green background that totally for the most part steals the attention away from her eyes. It is just too much. My choice probably would have been a darker more muted background. Black probably would have been very nice to make sure that the focus was directed towards her eyes and the lovely colors of purple rather than away. Hope that helps.

First, I like the intense gaze of your lovely model. I gave this a 5, impart because I'm not feeling anything from the portrait, it's just a portrait; IMO, this is due primarily to the lighting and background.

The lighting gurus will likely tell you that you have some hot spots on the face and neck, and that you did not achieve the Rembrandt style lighting voters were likely expecting. The background is interesting, looks like a giant leaf, but, IMO, it is much to bright and is visually very prominent.

love the purple on the green and what a fierce gaze she had

This image lacks subtlety for me. Very bold and jarring colors, although the model's eyes are beautiful.

wonderful colors, I like how the green is coming thru the scarf behind the model
