OK - Just an FYI that I didn't vote in this FS. But I will go ahead and give a critique club type comment. Just my perspective. Had I voted I would probably have given this a 5. I love cat images, but that may make me a bit harsh on my votes. Issues i have with this image - harsh straight on light. Almost looks like on camera flash. I crave soft shadows just as if it were a person. The light here just comes off too straight on and hard. From a pose perspective I am not digging that he isnt looking at me. His eyes appear to be looking a bit down so there isnt a strong eye contact. Makes it feel more snap shottish than portrait. When you catch a cat looking right at you it can grab you. This one the eyes just dont cut it. Soft area on the nose isnt an issue for me. Focus is good. You probably could have gotten away with even soft glowing the fur and keeping the eyes tack sharp - but not a biggie for me. The border doesn't suit the image well. Too heavy and bulky. I do like these types of borders in general - but not for close up in your face portraits (though I am sure I have a couple on images in my portfolio if I look). And i would prefer more image - square crop or something. Had the cat been looking straight on you probably could have pulled off a square crop that was balanced well. When it comes to cat portraits I have always been struck by yanko's - , , in particular, and I have sought to imitate them in my own cat shots. But the keys are similar to some of the stronger people portraits - soft light and good eye contact. Hope that's not too harsh. Just my opinion on strong cat faces. |
