Holiday Greetings from the Critique Club:
Psychephylax -- As many of your comments below mention, the lack of strong motion in your subject kept your entry from scoring better in this challenge.
Technically it's a beautiful photograph (and subject!). The strong color contrast between the subject and background work very well here. The Depth of Field (DOF) is also effective to pull the viewer's eye directly to the owl. I might like to see this image in portrait mode, to see if making more of the owl's body visible could improve the composition.
A few months ago I attended a photography lecture presented by a person who specializes in wild bird photography. One of his key points was the importance of showing the bird's eye(s) in the photograph -- and even better if you can capture a slight reflection off of the eye to show the moist surface.
Your image is interesting because it makes me wonder what the owl was looking at. Was there something above and to the right that might work in your composition?
Beautiful photograph (too bad the challenge subject wasn't birds of prey) -- LanSnake

What a magazine-quality photo! Such a beautiful animal, and nicely accented by the green needles on the right. |

Where is the motion in this picture? Otherwise good shot of the owl |

This doesn't really scream motion to me. I see him sitting there. I know the DO move, but I think the purpose was to Depict that movement. A very pretty shot, don't get me wrong. Focus and clarity are good, lighting on the subject is good, background isn't distracting. Overall a nice shot, but Owls don't scream movement to me. Good luck in the challenge. |

Nice picture of a beautiful creature, but not really demonstrating motion. Nicely exposed. |

Great shot, but doesn't show motion or convey a sense of motion or really have anything to do with motion (dispite the efforts of the title). 3 |

Beautiful owl. I wish there was actually some motion in the shot instead of just the title, though, because I really would like to score this higher. |

This is a really fantastic picture, the background and the pure white of the owl are great! However, I dont think that this shows motion......otherwise, i love it! |

This is a motion challenge and I will not vote very high on a shot, which fits to the challenge only by title. - 4 |

Its a great shot you have entered which i guess will get you a high score even though it doesn`t fit the challenge too well. |

Beautiful photo...perfect focus on the owl and great dof on the background. It's a bit weak on the topic..but I'm glad you submitted it anyway. :) |

Awesome capture. Excellent. Gotta subtract one point tho b/c it isn't exactly a shot of motion. Still a 7 tho. |

Lovely raptor; very nice image. He ain't moving much though in this image :). Since in the title you point out this guy is moving by night and since it seems to be night time, why is the bugger not moving ? :) Journey |
