I don't think this works particularly well for a b&w -- I think it's too busy. But since I tried, I figured I'd post it.

I agree I think it could work if you blurred out the background a bit and brought out more detail in the swan.

I think the business of the background makes a good contrast with the bird - and its a good capture just at the point of grounding

I find this shot quite humorous. Swans land so gracefully, and yet, take one moment in isolation and it could just as easily be struggling not to fall on its butt.

Oh, I don't know. All I could think of was "Touchdown" and up flaps.
Some pilots could take lessons (and perhaps have) from that landing.

I don't mind the texture on the landing field.

I think it looks very cool. Someone walked up behind me while I was looking at the image and said... "tell me that is NOT oil". Maybe you could soften the background a little to take out some of those noisy details... I really like it. Oh and of course I told her is was NOT oil!

It could work if you can soften the background mud/water so there is not so much texture and process to bring out the texture on the swan.
