 The time of day was not ideal with the harsh sun overhead and slightly to the left trying to blow out some highlights. I couldn’t quite get the aperture setting I wanted due to not having my tripod with me.

I hope the layers are clear enough for people. There are several supports with oval holes for this bridge so I’ve positioned myself to shoot through them.

Oh, and about the title. James Reason is a Professor who specialises in organisational type accidents and has many books and papers published on the subject (important to me as a safety specialist in a large airline). One of his most famous and used methods to simply explain the complex causes leading to an accident is his ‘Swiss Cheese Model’. He explains that organisations that are involved in high risk activities have several layers of defence to prevent an accident. Each layer (slice of cheese) has weaknesses (holes) and it takes a hole in each layer to align for an accident to occur. In other words, the stronger the defence layer (fewer holes) the less likely an accident can occur. So when I could look through all of the aligned holes of the supports I thought of the Swiss Cheese Model. For some reason I don’t expect many people will get this and maybe a few will get annoyed when they can’t find the photographer or DPCer. But I like to have fun :-)

This is a really good shot; I love the grit and real feel and what is not in the picture is the important thing; in other words, the composition is perfect.

I don't know why, but I like this a lot. My first gut feeling was that cropping out the actual bridge at the top and leaving only the worn/stained concrete would've made the shot more mysterious while still keeping it obvious as to what your subject is (since you can still see the bridge through the opening of the first oval). Very cool!
