Recently Magnumphotography and I went to a locale in a suburb where the local populace of white-tailed deer seems to be unusually tolerant of people.
As soon as we go there we saw deer calmly browsing, barely 50 feet away. Then as we got out of the car we saw at least 3 deer standing on a trail, again browsing, but with a sense of expectancy. We didn't ask questions, we just got out and began shooting!
Approximately 5 minutes later this elderly gentleman appeared and strode confidently past us up the trail towards the deer. I was sure we'd seen the last of them but instead even more deer appeared. Soon we saw why - his shoulder bag is stuffed with carrots! Obviously this is a routine ritual and explains why the deer are not easily spooked.
So while we both took advantage of the deer being quiet and standing still, he continued to feed them - either by hand or tossing carrots into the underbrush and soon vanished up the trail. By then, deer were getting close enough that Ryan even had one fawn nibbling at his jacket :-) We both got tremendously good shots that day.
And this is my first ever challenge entry with my new toy, hope it does well...yes, I know technically it is more of a profile than a shot from behind. But you still see his back for the most part and that's good enough for me :-)
So here's to you, Mr Man With The Carrots. Thanks from the deer, for showing such kindness to them when food may be uncertain, and from us photographers, for making an elusive subject so much easier to capture.
