A DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) commuter train rushes past Reunion Tower in downtown Dallas in the early evening.
I shot this scene a couple of years back and almost entered it in a freestudy, but changed my mind for something else. This challenge was a good opportunity to try again and see if I could improve on my earlier shot.
I had intended to shoot this with my 10-24 Tamron, as that handles distortion well at the focal length I needed. Unfortunately, that lens was at home, I had forgotten to retrieve it from my wife's camera bag. The 18-135 has some pretty heavy fisheye distortion at the wide end, but being basic editing, I couldn't do anything about it.
I guess I just got lucky with timing on the earlier one. It took a few tries for me to get the timing down on when to take the exposure, but ultimately, I think I ended up improving on my original.

It was also an interesting example in how quickly the light changes. I think I was there about an hour, starting 30 minutes before dark. At first I had to shoot using an ND filter and f22 in order to get a longish exposure. By the time I left, the camera was blinking the F3.5 at me to tell me it could not get enough light to maintain my chosen shutter speed of 2 seconds.
Post challenge notes:
This was one of the most consistent challenge entries I've ever had. It spent almost the entire challenge hovering between 6.10 and 6.20. Can't complain about a top 10! |

Nice work mate. FWIW I reckon this deserved to finish higher than my entry. |

Congratulations on the great finish for a great shot (checked for sensor dust :). Interesting point about the light change. Although these days we have long winter sunsets at these latitudes, I've also noticed how the lighting conditions can be tricky and uneven. |
