 A modified version of a technique I picked up from keyz in this month's side challenge. He did it simply by holding the lens and spinning the camera during the exposure. I added to it and tried it by holding the zoom ring steady and using it to rotate the camera. This gave me both a zoomblur and a spinblur as well.

The actual scene is a tradition at my daughter's college. During homecoming, there are students beating a drum nonstop. Not a musical instrument drum, but an oil drum. Groups take 1 hour shifts beating the drum. I understand these drums are eventually beaten flat and they go through 5 or 6 oil drums a year. I stood around for the hour my daughter's crew was on shift, trying to photograph it in various creative ways. This one had a dream like quality that I thought suited the topic. Well, at least it suits it as well as any of the other shoehorns will.

I always have concerns when entering abstracts, because I know abstracts tend to not have broad appeal a lot of the time. I've found, however, that I do better when I enter what I like instead of trying to second guess the masses. So I'm entering what I like. Hoping this one is strong enough to at least come in above my average and get a few good comments.

Anticipated critiques:
Haven't a clue, but I know someone will find something.

Post-challenge notes:
Did well enough on broad appeal for a blurry abstracty shot. It found an appreciative target audience. I'm pleased.

Sweet effect and cool technique (marking this a fave). I may have to try it, as I've already been playing with zoom and motion blur lately.

I really liked the effect and colours of this shot. I stared at it for quite a while and the only recognisable objects to me was a rusty steel bar and a stick but for some reason I thought I was looking down at a tractor with a red seat. I guess we all can see what we want with a shot like this. I quite liked this and gave it a 7. Well done Steve.
