The kid isnt a bum or homeless, just like so many that come to NY with great expectations only to reap the grapes of wrath. Embaressed to admit his failures to those at home who discouraged his breakaway he resorts to asking strangers to help pay his fare home where he will not admit failure but simply a change of heart.
The quote is that from abolitionist John Greenleaf Whittier.

Full of feeling, nicely composed, nice tonal range. Fits well with the challenge - doubly so with the poeme about words!

great shot .. I wonder how it would look if you hadn't cropped out the rest of his left foot and the rest of the sign. (9)

Poetry and photography.... what a match!!! Black and white is so much more poignant than a color shot - particularly of this scenario. I like it very much.

Touching. Reminds one of the risks that a youth just starting out faces (no matter the educational background.) B&W works well for the photo, but, I think the sleeves might be just a little overexposed. Good luck in the challenge, as this is a powerful shot with a message.

Nicely done...like the sign and the money in the cap is a nice touch. I do have to add that IMHO it looks set-up, in that the box he's sitting on is clean and the clothing is also clean and neatly pressed. The shoes only have minor scuffing. I could be all wrong and you could have found a decently-dressed, clean, neat homeless kid. Anyway, it's a well-executed idea, could have a bit more impact if he were more "weathered." :o)

Good shot. One of my favourites in the challenge.
Tells a story. Good mood set by the expression on the model's face.

What a powerful message he has written - very emotional image that really shows the emotions that can be conveyed in the written word.

Good study - model looks quite well dressed though. Good echo of the kind of scene which is played out throughout every major city.

the poet! there are so many pics of homeless people, and living in NYC, i see them all the time & am somewhat desensitized, however this photo meets the criteria of the challenge very well & it is compositionally very good as well. nice job, 8

Was this a model shot or a candid? Either way, wow, very poignant. I like the choice of B&W here.

Great image - tells a sad story and compells me to throw a few bucks his way. The B&W treatment works for this image well and I like the composition. (8)

Too bad we can't see the eyes of the subject -- I think this would have given the shot more impact.

His clothes are remarkably clean for a homeless person... Nice composition and exposure though.
