This is one of several homeless people who sit and beg for money on the streets of the East African city where I live. Today I sat down next to this man and spoke with him for about ten minutes, communicating as well as my six months of Swahili would allow. He is blind, and his legs are crippled. He is unable to work and he has no family. His children have all died. He laughed when I recognized the name of village he is from.
I gave him some money, a little more than I usually do. Before I left, I asked him if I could take a picture. "Of me?" he asked in Swahili, smiling, not understanding why anyone would want to take his picture. "No problem.", he said and returned to his stone pose, hands upturned, waiting for someone to throw a few coins his way.

This image finished 3rd with a score of 6.4890 before being DQ'd. It's my own dumb fault - I honestly thought this was a Basic Editing challenge and didn't even know there was such a thing as a Minimal Editing challenge until after voting ended and I got a validation request. Sasa najua. Lesson learned.
It was fun having my photo on the front page for a day though! |

| This comes off as more of a portrait than something that would run in a paper, but it's still interesting and tells a story. |
