Take a lot of pepping up to score well, but if you have kitchen scissors, a garlic press, a cutting board and some garlic you got the essentials :-)

I don't know if I "pepped it up" any better (though I added some ginger and onion), and odds are it won't score better than Robert's, but I was unable to get back to the location to shoot my own first entry within the time constraints. :-(

-Mixed incandescent and CFL lighting, Auto WB
-Handheld, SuperMacro mode
-RGB Curve
-Blue/Yellow Curve
-A little local Dodge/Burn on reflection on the onion
-Saturation Layer -27 on master channel
-Rotate/Crop
-Resize
-USM at 12%/48 dia/TH = 0
-USM at 66%/0.6 dia/TH = 5 (applied three times)
-SaveAs JPEG at quality 9/10 = 300KB

nice take on the original. I like the elements you chose with all the different textures and color.

An improvement on the original composition, although the lack of DOF on the garlic is perhaps distrating

Nice, could be better composed.

Bear_Music's first entry, the tighter framing makes this more engaging than the original

Interesting subject matter... the lighting could have been much better. The luxury of still life is that you get to control everything.

The lighting is a bit harsh but, the image tells a story.

I would have to say a marked improvement...and that's one shiny knife!!!
