 Cropped and soft focused on Picasa 3.6.
I am a complete novice. I left the flash off and set up reading lamps around the subject. I need help learning how to use my camera properly and to it's fullest potential.

Thanks for all the comments - I am a photgraphy rookie. I set this picture up on the back of our couch in our family room with reading lamps stuck between the cushions on either side of her (I was trying not to touch the hot bulbs on anything & burn the house down!). I will adjust my jerry-rigging better next time. I welcome any more advice!!

Nicely done overall, although I think that the harsh light on the back cover of the book brings the image down - I find that my eye is drawn there first, as it's the brightest part of the image.

Maybe lighting from the other side would have worked better? The glare on the back cover is distracting and spoils the mood. DoF is nice, but the darker eye seems more in focus.

I like the idea here, but it seems everything is out of focus, and really I would have preferred the little girl to be looking at the book and not over the top. Just a personal preference of course. I think had this been in focus it would have been a contender for the blue ribbon!

I wish the light had come from the other side so the back of the book wouldn't be so bright. Such a large bright spot is pretty distracting.
