Hi Melissa and Greetings from the critique Club
Purple Gaze is an excellent purple shot! This wall is a great place to take vivid portraits. You've found a good spot to return to as you already noted in your comments.
First let's talk about the technical stuff:
Exposure is perfect - bringing out the colors on the wall as they should be.
Focus is good on the wall but a bit soft on the walking lady. You may want to rethink your settings and determine why she's not sharp. Is it movement? If so - you should shoot at a faster shutter speed by opening up the f-stop a stop or 2. (I expect it is movement since she is so close to the wall which is tack sharp.)
Composition is very nice EXCEPT that it is usually better if there is more room in front of a subject than behind. So - if the model were walking the other direction it would be better. Or if she were positioned on the left side (same 1/3 you now have - but on the left) - it would be better. I think you have chosen a perfect area of the wall as your background. (But there may be other nice areas too - I can't tell and don't know the spot...)
If you have control of the model (this appears to be a candid) - I would also suggest a top other than white. The red bandana scarf is great - but the white top is not the best choice.
I don't know if the orientation of the site would make it possible - but a shadow of the model on the wall or ground would probably help.
After reviewing the comments - I see that some viewers don't really understand the DPC rules. For example, if you did not have the model in the shot as one suggested, it would be "just" a picture of someone else's artwork and most likely would be suggested for DQ.
The model gives additional interest, scale, and definitely removes the question of whether is only someone else's art.

I think what this photo is missing is a clear subject - my eyes lack anything clear to be looking at. While a convincing, interesting subject, with a little more though it could have been fantastic.

| I really like the concept behind this photograph. What I think would have made this photo even better (in my opinion) is if the person walking down the sidewalk was just a bit further left; it would then look like the purple face was actually looking at the person. Great effort, though! I'd give it a 7! |

| First let me appologize and also to say that I did not enter this contest. I am confused by some of the terminology in the rules but I think that this picture is of art work and by my interpretation of the rules it is not usable. I did want to click on recommend this for disqualification but I do not know what all the reprocussions are so will just leve you with this comment instead. Not a bad pic at all but tell me what you think the art work rule means to you so maybe I might have a better understanding. |
