Image captured at the Front Range Classic in Fort Collins, Colorado on May 1, 2010. The height of 16' 3.25" was cleared on this day in the Pole Vault event.
The title was inspired by the following poem:

High Flight

by John Gillespie Magee, Jr.

Oh, I have slipped the surly bonds of earth,
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds...and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of...wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air.
Up, up, the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, nor even eagle flew.
And while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space...
...put out my hand, and touched the face of God

Very nice to include the poem that inspired your title. Nice work Richard and strong finish and I also think this should have placed higher.

It's hard to imagine that he is going to make it over the pole without knocking it over. Great capture.

Interesting shot. Just such a strange moment in the jump. Almost looks like he wants that pole back!
Nice use of shutter speed and depth of field.

Ok on a second thought, you do get an upgrade in score from me. I think you are definitely worth an 8. You have symmetry, leading lines, clarity, focus, good colors, and the picture has a personality. Enjoy your new score: 8/10!

damn that tree! really, the only thing between an 7 and a 10 would have been to have shot from a lower perspective, removing all elements but the jumper and the bar.

Can't tell whether he's made it or not. So I say great timing. It makes me want to see the next frame.
