Mechanical pencils, or sharp-pens as the Japanese call them, are used a lot in Japan. However, in elementary schools, kids are only allowed to use ordinary pencils until sixth grade.
On the day the Challenge was announced, there was a two-page ad in the paper that featured, among other things, five pens, pencils and sharp-pens standing on their tips. Being a newspaper picture, it was hard to tell how it was done. I asked Tim how he would try such a photo. He suggested wires or something, but that gave me the idea of hanging them.
So I went to the ¥100 shop and bought a packet of five new sharp-pens (¥100) and a white board (¥300 - special price) that I would be able to stick the leads through.
After a few experiments, I found the trick was to push enough lead through and peg it on the top side. (And also take out the spare leads.) Too bad I couldn't get them perfectly vertical. ;-Þ
I had my slave flash under the kotatsu and shot upside down. Post-processing was pretty basic.
The cap of one of the pencils flung itself somewhere to places unknown (viz under the hamster's box), so that's why I only used four.

| Well, I guess some people didn't wonder how pencils could be balanced like this. And that's why there is the obvious line there to show that they're not lying on the table or whatever. |

| I like the colors. But it appears as if the the pencils are being cut - the contrast difference between your backround and what they are standing on is too obvious. |

| I love the colors and the idea. I think the horizontal line is distracting and the two shades of white also. Seeing as it's advanced editing, I would have liked to see that blurred out. |
