I was struggling with the idea of making a branch isolated enough to make a good picture out of it and was messing with our houseplant in various positions.

There was a couple of branches on the plant that were bare apart from 1 or 2 leaves and I thought it would be cool if I could have those sitting in a test tube, then I remembered these champagne flutes we have.

Once I got the glass and took a few shots on its own, I knew how I wanted the finished shot to look. I went out and grabbed a small branch off a tree and after a bit of experimenting with DOF and light angle I got to this.

Editing is very minimal, I cloned out a couple of small marks on the glass and table, USM while still at full size, added a warming filter with low opacity to take away the harshness and give it a slightly softer look.

I'm really pleased with this, it ended up looking exactly how I imagined it, which is incredibly rare!

Greetings from the Critique Club!

First Impression:
Only got around to voting on about 25% of the entries and didn't get a chance to vote on your image.

Composition: The composition is great and I really love the gradient of light in the background, its just perfect.

Subject: What a great idea to use a champagne flute to hold the branch, it's shape and curves mesh with the curve of the branch so nicely.

Final thoughts: I just don't see any flaws in this, it's a great shot! I don't understand why this didn't score higher. From the top 20 it looks like people really liked trees. You received an average score of 7.33 from your commenters though!

I generally don't like these high key images, but I like the way this becomes more pleasing the more you look to the right
