Dan, I've been going through your portfolio and had to stop and comment on this shot. What a masterful capture. Reading in your comments how you were trying to recreate a particular moment makes it even more special. Keep writing about your photos. I always learn something from you. |

Hi Daniel,
This was one of my favorite shots in this challenge. The lighting & candid pose are superb. You have captured a man's character, not his portrait.
Well Done! |

There is a story behind this shot. I sailed with captain George in Maryland. He is tan brown all over with shiny skin. When he hoisted the main sail, with the sun at 3:00 o'clock and the reflected light off the sail lit his shadow area with wonderful highlights, I decided to duplicate this effect with a studio shot, hence the name Capt. George Highlighted.
I used strobes with umbrellas and then employed a fresnel spot light, I knew the spotlight would get me in trouble because some photographers do not like the face sculptured with highlights, but I was following the feel when he was on the deck and I took over 40 shots, some simply perfect but lacking the highlights. The item he leans on is his captains' jacket. This inclusion was also questionable, but I went with it anyway.
Captain George is the nicest guy. He virtually feeds everyone in the marina and his disposition is radiant and uplifting. |

Very nice portrait! Great job of capturing the depth in his face. The colors, especially the skin tones, seem a little flat though. Maybe needs more light? Maybe needs a boost in levels? Making skin tones right is not my forte unfortunately...

One of my top picks this theme. Excellent expression on your model (you've capture warmth and a devilish sense of humor) I would have liked a bit less right elbow. Really like the gray/blue color palete. |

Lighting: The lighting is amoung the best in the challenge, although I would have liked to see it a bit more diffused to try and counter the shine on some parts of his skin. The catchlight in his eyes is just barely noticable, just enough to subtly do its job.
Pose: The pose is good. It and his expression communicate a lot.
Background: The black works well with this and is well done. |

Whoa! Nice strong portrait! I don't think the lighting, color, expression, anything! could be improved here. Superior! |

This is a near-perfect portrait, IMHO. Lighting is excellent, pose is great, focus, color, etc. is simply well done. A very distinguished looking gentleman, too! Great effort. :o) |

Your model seems confident and relaxed. The black background is great, but, I am not sure that I like the second color (blue) in front, I would have preferred all black. The lighting is perfect. My guess: he'd like an 8x10. Nicely done -8 |

Great face! great triangluar composition! Lots of wonderful leading lines, cheeks, arms, shirt folds, makes a nice flow for the viewers eyes. lighting is a bit harsh and I find the cloth under his elbows distracting. also that dip in his next commands too much attention, soften it out? |

Very nice lighting and pose.
Critique: The arms seem distorted a bit because they look bigger then his face. I wonder how close you were to the person and what lens you used. Try back away from the person and zooming in. Make sure you use a tripod when using the zoom. |

Not sure what your title means, but what does that matter? The picture is a good capture. I'd crop some more off top. The arms look just a tad out of focus to my aging eyes. It's a good portrait; I'm sure he or his family would want it framed and on the piano. |

Harsh light, lots of blown highlights, reflections on the forehead, cheeks arms, t-shirt...Nice pose but I think a reflector to bounce the flash on would have made it better. In formal portraits lighting is critical, it makes or breaks the photo. |

Little too much space on top and the lights are a little bright on his cheeks and forehead (almost like he was sweating a bit) ... but the pose is great and the expression is very natural ... very nice |
