I'm working on a project for school: take a pair of shoes and photograph then in 15 different styles/locations/whatevers. This is this semester's version of last semester's shell project. As with the shell project, you can probably expect to see a lot of pictures of these shoes. I took this shot before the "Shoes" challenge, and then I didn't have time to shoot that week, even though I've had a million good ideas knocking around my head.

For this photo, I was photographing the shoes in an oil puddle in the middle of the road. There was a man working on his old car nearby, and he became very interested in what I was doing. When I told him about this shoe project, he suggested that I photograph the shoes with his car. I obviously took him up on his suggestion! Actually, it was even his idea for me to put the shoes on the pedals, so thank you "Frank, the Chevy owner."

As for the editing, I wanted to make the photo look a bit older so it would fit the '60s/Americana/??? theme I had going, so I edited the colors to look more film-esque, meaning a little orangey-brown and with detail in the shadows.

Great story. Boy all I get when I'm shooting weird things is dirty looks! Wish there were more Franks around. You did a nice job on the processing - has that vintage feel. Good luck with the project - hope to see some more of it posted here.

GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB

It's always tough to see an imaginative image like this one get a low score. But it happens now and then.

I have a feeling that some of the techniques you used were misinterpreted as 'mistakes' as in your deliberately almost monochromatic image. Then our voters often come down hard on images with foreground blur. Still, you did receive some positive comments from those who 'got it' and you had a fine chance to photograph good subject matter in situ so some plusses came from the experience.

About the only suggestion I would make with this fun image would have been to round out the tops of those sneakers to make it appear that an invisible entity was actually in them. But, really that's just another interpretation of your fine idea.

Best regards,

Alice

Great unconventional image. Wish there was more "dirt/grit" on the shoes. 9

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: This is a great image - I can see how it is probably a Shoes outtake but there is enough other stuff going on for this to live comfortably in Free Study company. The coloration is fabulous and I've seen that blue and brown be styled together in a range of contexts. The sharp texture in the carpet helps to draw the eye too.

Critical stuff: Not much but I do wonder if the image might be augmented with a vignette.

Overall: I really like this image, the gentle colours help offer an image that is really easy on the eyes.

Neat idea. This would have been a cool shot for Shoes.
